If you have not yet been introduced to Korean indie rock giants Nell here is a great article from Billboard on the band – http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/k-town/5922995/nell-stays-…
A quick intro: the band has been around for over 10 years and is made up of members Kim Jong Wan (vocal), Lee Jae Kyung (guitar), Lee Jung Hoon (bass) and Jung Jae Won (drums). Nell is signed under Woollim Entertainment. They performed at SXSW last year. I’m not that familiar with their older albums but their 2014 release Newton’s Apple is at the top of my list followed closely by Escaping Gravity (2013).
Along with their amazing sound and lyrics, another thing that makes Nell stand out in my opinion is their music videos. They are visually spectacular and always perfectly capture the mood and message of the songs.
The 1st Nell song and music video I was ever exposed to was ‘The Day Before’ from their album Slip Away. The video features actors Lee Min-ki and Song Jae-rim. There are numerous interpretations of this video and a full translation of the lyrics (found here) are only part of the puzzle. There is a fascinating article on Seoulbeats that reviews the entire album and discusses different theories on the depth of meaning inside of ‘The Day Before’. It’s a video I never get tired of watching.
Here are three more of my favorite videos with links to the lyrics above.
‘Ocean of Light’ from Escaping Gravity – Lyrics
‘Green Nocturne’ (청춘연가) – Lyrics
‘Four Times Around The Sun’ (지구가 태양을 네 번) from Newton’s Apple – Lyrics
