Last night (early this morning in the States) the annual Mnet Asian Music Awards were held in Hong Kong. Several Korean hip hop, R&B and indie artists were nominated for awards in different categories.
Timbaland was recognized as Best International Producer and Quincy Jones received the Worldwide Inspiration Award. Both artists were in attendance along with Wiz Khalifa who performed.
Zico received the award for Best Male Artist after releasing and producing lots of music this year. CJamm and BewhY earned the title of Best Rap Performance for their collaboration track ‘Puzzle‘. Crush won an award for ‘Best Male Vocal Performance – Male Solo’ for ‘Don’t Forget‘ to his apparent utter surprise haha (see the tweet below). He wasn’t expecting to win so he didn’t prepare a speech. Dean was also nominated in this category.
BewhY took the stage with world famous pianist Yiruma for a memorable performance and Dean, Crush and Zico didn’t disappoint with their individual performances and collaboration stage for ‘Bermuda Triangle’.
I hope in the future Korean hip hop will get its own award show as the MAMAs are mostly K-pop dominated. Watch the performances below!
